Cape Verde, officially the Republic of Cape Verde, is named Cap-Vert, now in Senegal on the westernmost point of Africa and is a haven of white sandy beaches and small fishing villages nestled into quiet coves. It is formed by 10 main islands and about 8 islets, of which, only one, Santa Lucia, is uninhabited as it is a Natural Reserve. All the Cape Verde islands are volcanic in origin, but an active volcano exists only on Fogo.

Cape Verde is a stunning archipelago of contrasts and beauty. Many say that this chain of nine populated islands, some separated by wide, windswept stretches of sea is a little taste of the Caribbean. With each island showing a cultural face as striking and varied as the geography of the archipelago itself and with the Cape Verde picture perfect beaches and all year round good weather, the Cape Verde Islands are certainly shaping up to be a holiday hotspot of the future.

The Cape Verde archipelago was uninhabited until the Portuguese discovered the islands in 1456. African slaves were brought to the islands to work on Portuguese plantations and as a result, Cape Verdeans are of mixed African and European origin. Due to this history of discovery and colonization, Cape Verde now blends West African and Portuguese elements in many unique and moving ways.

Cape Verde is the nearest tropical island destination for Western Europe, with its year-round sunshine, fantastic fishing and great water sports combined with very low property prices, it makes Cape Verde the perfect investment for the future. Transport links are improving all the time as interest in this archipelago increases and with direct flights from London planned making the journey an easy 5½ hour flight, tourism is set to soar. The Cape Verdean Government is taking heed of the lessens learnt from its neighbours, the Canary Islands, and has already set in place a tourism infrastructure that should avoid the overbuilding and tourist boom that has plagued many other holiday island destinations in the past.

The Cape Verdeans believe very strongly in their island heritage and are looking into many different ways to preserve their culture while embracing the better quality of life, better jobs and better schooling that the international interest in the islands is bringing.

Cape Verde's official language is Portuguese, but Portuguese Creoles (Crioulo, Criol, Krioulo, Caboverdiano), which vary considerably from island to island, are widely used. Each of the 9 inhabited islands of Cape Verde has its own style of Creole.
